The first Ghost Rider was subpar at best, but I figured why not give it a second chance, after all it’s by different writers and different directors. This was a mistake. There was no continuity; it felt like fast forward, rewinding, then stopping randomly and watching a scene, rinse and repeat. The monologs to explain back story were dull, the only decent part about any flash back was the animation that followed along: a mix of cell shading and graphic art styles. The best character was the “side kick” that was never fully explained, why are his eyes crazy inhuman colors? He offered the most continuous thought, actions, and drive as a character and he did pretty good comic relief.
Nicolas Cage was not at his best, being desperate really doesn’t suit him. He claims strong emotional ties to Ghost Rider as a comic book fan, even trying his own hand at writing one with his son called Voodoo Child. Why do I bring this up… because how could he allow this to happen to Ghost Rider, TWICE?!? Totally ignoring all the bad directing, bad scene changes, and plot holes the size of moon beams let’s just look at Ghost Rider the spirit of vengeance. They made him more animalistic and predatory which is definably an improvement, but every time they just took it too far! Cage tries for crazy dark passenger that is on the edge of breaking out constantly but it ends in more Joker meets the mean cat from you tube. I think he spent a good 2 minutes staring into the eyes of a bad guy, the whole time you are waiting for the penance stare to burn his soul but no… he just walked away soul untouched. The Rider was twitchy, crack addict twitchy, and there was a random scene where after a grenade went off he floated in midair, why, I have no idea. Graphics were greatly improved from the last bout, shoulders smoldering, skull laughing but it didn’t make up for the randomness of the Riders behaviors. After being in contact with an underground boxing ring Cage goes crazy trying to contain Ghost Rider, eventually failing after a four to five minutes of riding away laughing and twitching hysterically from the evil scum… why is the spirit of vengeance going away from evil not towards?
The best parts of the whole film where not the high budget graphics or crappy set changes but the funnies spread between. My favorite, the bonding between Cage and the boy he’s trying to protect from the devil. They joke about why the rider doesn’t use a taxi, train or roller coaster as his main ride instead of an old beat up motorcycle and the topper why happen when the Rider takes the call from nature.
Unfortunately this is not enough to make this film worth seeing in theaters, I say wait for the Netflix version and lots of friends to joke with while you watch. RATING 4/10
